Are You a Carer ?.  Information for people looking after a relative, friend or neighbour.

Who are Carers ?.   If you are looking after someone in your family, a friend or neighbour who is elderly, frail or disabled.  YOU ARE A CARER

What help can Carers expect ?. From the social care and housing department you can expect to have your needs ASSESSED. To be listened to and have your contribution acknowledged. The right to a break from caring and help to achieve this. To be envolved in the decision making about how services are provided.

To be given practical help and support in your role as a CARER. To be put in touch with other organisations and services that can help you.

How do you get help ?.  When you first make contact with Social Care and Housing Department it is usual for a a home visit to be made by a social worker. You will then have the opportunity to explain you situation with the social worker. Your needs and the needs of the cared for person will be discussed before arranging any services. This is called an assessment.  Assessments are not tests.  They give you the opportunity to talk about what you are able and willing to do and whether you fell able to continue caring. it is advisable that you consider talking things over with the cared person, to try to agree what kind of help you both need. The social worker can visit you both, or, you can ask for a private meeting if you prefer.

Services that can help make caring easier include:

Home Care--to help people most in need to stay in their own homes.

Respite Care--a break from caring

Support and Guidance--information and advice

Aids and Equipment--to help with everyday tasks

Minor adaptations to the home--such as handrails and ramps

Dispersed Alarm System--an emergency call system linked to a central control centre
