Housing and Adaptations

As a result of changes in a persons health or circumstances there is often a need to adapt homes to ensure that they continue to be suitable for use. The most common requirements relate to access to the property and the need for bathing facilities, however other needs can be considered.

There are several ways of applying for adaptations within properties dependent on the type of tenture (owner occupiers or tenants). It is generally the case that owner occupiers and private tenants will apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, while public sector tenants will rely on their landlords to provide the required adaptations. In addition ther may be assistance available via Care and Repair where minor works are required and equipment may be provided from Social Services or the Health Authority. It is important that all those persons requiring adaptations have a point of contact and whilst they do approach bodies such as   Care and Repair. It is generally recognised that the Home Improvement Team within Carmarthenshire County Council, normally process such requests

or refer to more appropriate bodies.

The assessment of a persons adaptation needs is carried out by an Occupational Therapist from either the Home Improvement Team, Social Services,

or privately employed.

It is possible that some properties will present difficulties in adapting or that significant disrepair also exists, the Home Improvement Team will

provide appropriate advice in such cases.

Leisure and Recreational Activities

You may find that due to your disability you have more free time. You may be unable to return to full time work or you may not be able to carry on with

some previous hobby or activity. This does not mean that you need to become despondent or bored. There are many new and interesting leisure,

recreational and cultural activities that are available and accessible.

You may wish to attend a day Centre close to you. Day centres can be a source of information and support in regard of sport, arts and crafts, and

recreational activities in the area. you may find that there are local voluntary organisations that you feel may be able to offer support in some way.

Community Further Education centres also have a wide range of interesting activities that are open to those that wish to participate. There are many sports clubs available in the area which support disabled people in archery, bowls and swimming.

On behalf of the Carmarthenshire Disability Coalition for Action, you can contact Mr Glan Morris, Coalition Development Officer on 01269 842010 for

further information.
